Just moved to Maryland about a month ago, but not new to fly fishing. I do love the fact that Maryland has so many places to fish, and all of them are completely different. I was on the Gunpowder today, fishing the section just above the Falls Road Bridge; very beautiful area, but deffinetely a very busy area. There were a few fisherman, and even more kayakers. My question is this. During the summer months is it best to fish in the area where I was at, or further downstream? And when are where are the crowds less, and at what times of the year?
Thanks

The water stays colder the closer you get to the dam, so you were headed in the right direction. As for the floaters, they're everywhere in the summer, along with swimmers, dogs, and even the occasional horse. IMHO, it probably doesn't hurt to fish in the summer when the flow is decent (60 cfs+), but I usually stay away when it gets low, as the fish are stressed. Spring and fall are the best times by far.

In the summer, I have found it better to take a drive and fish in Pennsylvania. No Yak hatches up there!

ive been fishing the gunpowder almost 4x a week for the past few months and ive been having probably the best summer fishing ever. You need to time your trips though, rule of thumb i do not fish fri-sun anytime btwn 11am-6pm.

As far as the falls road bridge i have found this area very productive especially in the deep pools just below the bridge(also make for great fishing if you decide to throw waders over your suit on a lunch break.)

You might also wanna try north of big falls off monkton rd, i rarely see other anglers there and i have pulled some nice fish out as of late, mostly on nymph rigs.

When the flow is what it is let's leave the few little fish we have left alone.  Just sayin'...
